Jim vs. Bench Press, DB Bench Rows

Wrapping up the heavy part of this 5-3-1 section.

Bench press
150 x 5
170 x 3
190 x 2 (mayyyyybe 2.5? but probably not)

DB bench rows
60 x 5
70 x 3
75 x 4

I really wanted to keep that “get 3 reps on the last set” streak going, but I don’t think I can say that it happened. My spotter had to put some fingers under the bar on the third rep, so while the bar came up I don’t think I can count the rep. And honestly I can’t fault the spotter: it was probably the best call.

And hey, I got 4 reps on my last set of rows! Finished up with 10 minutes on the elliptical.

Jim vs. Back Squats

Travel and insomnia kept me from working out for a few days, but I got back in today.

Back squats
205 x 5
230 x 3
255 x 3

The trend of getting 3 reps in on the 1+ sets continues! Finished with ten minutes on the elliptical.

Jim vs. Death By DB Snatches

The hotel gym didn’t have kettlebells, so I did this.

Death by DB snatches
Do 1 dumbbell snatch in the first minute, two in the second, three in the third, and so on until you cannot finish the allotted number of dumbbell snatches in a given minute

I used a 25lb dumbbell because, as near as I can tell from this blog, I haven’t done a dumbbell snatch in almost a decade. (Damn.) I didn’t worry to much about that, as this workout is very much self-scaling.

Felt easy at first, but then: this kind of workout always does. I finished 19 full rounds, and 17 reps in my 20th. Definitely feel a little shaky now.

Jim vs. Bent-Over Rows, DB Shoulder Press

Apparently I forgot to post this when it happened, so I’m adding and back-dating it almost two weeks later.

Bent-over rows
115 x 5
130 x 3
145 x 5

Dumbbell shoulder press
40s x 5
45s x 3
50s x 3

I’m assuming I did 10 minutes on the elliptical, too.

Jim vs. Deadlifts

Students are back; glad I got a rack.

Deadlifts
210 x 5
240 x 3
265 x 3

I wanted two reps in that last set, got ’em, then thought, “Do I have a third in me?” I did, in fact, which felt good.

Finished with 10 minutes on the elliptical.

Jim vs. Snow And a Finisher

Had to shovel some snow today, but not as much as I often do after a storm. So I came back in and did this as a finisher:

10, 8, 6, 4, 2 of:
jumping lunges
Hindu push-ups

Could’ve done more of the lunges, but those push-ups got me. Finished in 2:34.

Jim vs. KB Cleans

Home version of one I like quite a bit.

Kettlebell cleans, 53 x 2 each hand, on the minute for 10 minutes

Felt alright.

Jim vs. Bench Press, DB Bench Rows

Wrapping up the second fortnight.

Bench press
140 x 3
160 x 3
180 x 4

DB bench rows
55 x 3
65 x 3
70 x 6

Wrapped up with five minutes on the rowing machine. Schedule was tight this week.

Jim vs. Back Squats

Today was chaotic, especially schedule-wise, but I got this in.

Back squats
190 x 3
215 x 3
245 x 4

Glad I got that fourth rep, didn’t have time to do anything after except shower.

Jim vs. Burpees, KB Swings

Did I really used to do 55 reps of these, with the 53lb bell? Almost unimaginable.

10, 8, 6, 4, 2 of:
burpees
kettlebell swings, 35lbs

Finished in 4:02, then had a lie-down.
