Jim vs. Burpees

I’m on the road, and I feel like crap. Decided to work out anyway, with a short one that works in a hotel room.

Burpees x 50
4:32

Not my best time for this one, but not my worst, either. Just glad I got something in, frankly, under the circumstances.

Jim vs. KB Snatch & Burpees

This is another home mod. When I talked with Judd about it, he suggested replacing the barbell snatch reps with KB snatch reps for each arm. But as it’s my first metcon in nearly a month, I thought a 1-for-1 sub would probably be fine.

12-9-6-3
Kettlebell snatch
Burpees

Finished in 4:37, sucking serious wind after. If this one comes up again, I’ll give Judd’s version a go. This version was fine for today; I needed something Nasty, Brutish, and Short.

Jim vs. Chipper

I’m not sure if this is really the Chipper, or simply chipper. Frankly, don’t much care.

“Chipper”
For time:
Handstand push-up progressions* x 20
Pull-ups x 25
Kettlebell swings (35lb) x 30
Sit-ups x 35
Burpees x 40

Unsurprisingly, the burpees ate up most of my time. Helluva way to end a WOD. Finished in 9:27.

* Today’s progression saw my feet up on my 18″ box jump platform.

Jim vs. The Filthy Fifty (or at least the Terrible Thirty-Five)

It’s a long road back.

For time:
35 box jump, 18 inch box
35 jumping pull-ups
35 kettlebell swings, 1 pood
35 jumping lunges
35 Ab-Mat sit-ups
35 push press, 20lb dumbbells
35 Good Mornings
35 sandbag thrusters, 25lb bag
35 burpees
35 (jump rope x 3) (i.e. 105 reps)

This is another one I haven’t touched in over three years. Last time I did it, I did it as Rx’d (with a few substitutions based on limited equipment) and finished in just over 32 minutes. This time I was back to the scaled version, and finished in 20:00 on the nose.

Looking back, I’ve done the 35-rep version in about 15 minutes, but even then I made some key substitutions that probably made this go-round the tougher of the two.

But still: long road back.

Jim vs. Snatch-grip Deadlift, Sit-ups & Burpees

I like my Fridays being deadlift days, and alternating between regular deadlifts one week and variations the next.

Snatch-grip deadlifts
185 x 1
225 x 1
265 x 1
245 x 1
205 x 1

Glad I brought chalk for this one. Afterwards, I went for a slightly longer metcon:

10, 9, 8… 1 of:
Sit-ups
Burpees

Finished up in 8:24, which is one second faster than last time and two seconds slower than the time before that. I seem to have found a plateau in this particular path to Ragnarok.

Jim vs. Kettlebell Workout, Week 8 Day 2

Normally, the second time I do one of these workouts, it’s as Rx’d. But then, normally I’m able to finished the scaled-back version the first time. That didn’t happen last week, so this week’s goal was to just get through said scaled-back version.

For time:
Burpees x 40
Squats x 40
Pull-ups x 40
Push-up x 40
Walking lunges x 40
KB swings x 40
Sit-ups x 40

And that modest goal, I achieved. I was somewhat conservative in my pacing in service of that goal, but still wrapped this up in 15:46.

Jim vs. Kettlebell Workout, Week 7 Day 2

Yesterday I woke up feeling sick. You don’t want to go into a workout that starts with 40 burpees when you feel nauseous prior to burpee #1, so I went back to bed. Ended up staying home from work, too.

Gave it a go today, though. May not have been a great idea.

For time:
Burpees x 40
Squats x 40
Pull-ups x 40
Push-up x 40
Walking lunges x 40
KB swings x 3

Why three KB swings? Because that’s how far I got before I hit the ground to fight off the urge to puke. There were supposed to be 40 sit-ups, too. And naturally, I don’t know how long this took me because the time got messed up.

So, my ass is kicked.

Jim vs. Kettlebell Workout, Week 4 Day 1

Didn’t do this one quite as Rx’d, but I did ramp it up past last week’s version.

1-arm KB clean, squat, and press, 5 x 5

Renegade row & push-up combo, 4 x 5

Superset x 3 of:
KB overhead walk x 100ft
KB farmers walk x 100ft

1-arm KB get-up sit ups, 2 x 5/5

Superset x 2 of:
Jump rope x 250
Burpees x 15
KB swings x 10

Beyond adding an extra set to the KB clean, squat, and presses, and an extra rep to each set of renegade rows and push-ups, I also used the 35lb kettlebell on the sit-ups, just with anchored feet. Still very rough.

Jim vs. Kettlebell Workout, Week 3 Day 1

I’m sure that on some level, weeks one and two prepared me for week three. But it was damned tough to notice. Today’s workout was generally painful.

1-arm KB clean, squat, and press, 4 x 5

Renegade row & push-up combo, 4 x 4

Superset x 3 of:
KB overhead walk x 100ft
KB farmers walk x 100ft

1-arm KB get-up sit ups, 2 x 5/5

Superset x 2 of:
Jump rope x 250
Burpees x 15
KB swings x 10

Where to begin?

  • Those KB clean, squat, and presses were supposed to be doubles. I just used a single KB, and did straight sets of 5, rather than 5L & 5R. I know thrusters well enough to make that call.
  • This was the first time I’ve done renegade rows, and it was brutal. Going offset — using both the 35 and 53 bells, and switching sides each round — did not help.
  • The walks were fine; I used the 35 bell and alternated left hand overhead, right hand farmer walk, switch, etc. I’m tempted to try the 53 next week.
  • The get-up sit-ups were a total failure. Couldn’t do a single rep with the 35. Used a 20lb dumbbell, and it was still ugly. This needs serious work.
  • I got through the final superset as prescribed, except for a longer break between rounds. I was wrecked by this point.

Overall, just a brutal start to the week. Looks like the second fortnight really ramps it up. Gods only know what Weeks 7-8 will feel like.

Jim vs. Back Squats, Sit-ups & Burpees

More barbells.

Back squat
140 x 3
170 x 3
200 x 3
185 x 3
155 x 3

I closed the gaps between loads somewhat on these; starting at 120 seemed off.

10, 9, 8… 1 of:
Sit-ups
Burpees

Finished in 8:25. Three seconds longer than last time, but I feel like it’s within the margin of error.
